Helping Children Experiencing Homelessness To Thrive
15% of those experiencing homelessness in San Diego are families. At the San Diego Rescue Mission, we know that to prevent homelessness in the next generation, we must start with our children. Children experiencing homelessness face unthinkable challenges: mental health problems, academic struggles, emotional distress, lack of emotional attachment, and more.
Our Children’s Resource Center serves the emotional and educational needs of all the children and their families staying in our emergency shelter or residential program, Mission Academy.
We support parents and healthy child development by:
- Building social-emotional resilience and executive functioning skills for children and parents.
- Providing one-on-one parent conference meetings to ensure their child’s behavioral, educational and emotional success.
- Encouraging positive engagement with their child to strengthen family bonds.
- Identifying barriers to overcome academic hardships.
The Children’s Resource Center serves every child that walks through our doors with excellence, compassion and care.
Our Educational Specialists and Early Childhood Specialists are trained to provide a trauma-informed approach to help children grow physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually so they can reach their full potential.
The Children’s Resource Center provides essential skills children need for school readiness, strengthens parent-child relationships, offers positive parenting tools and supports children in public education through a person-centered approach.
Expanded Program Features:
- Serving children birth to 18 years old
- School enrollment, transportation and ongoing, in-school support
- Parenting classes and family counseling
- Play therapy for children with outdoor play facilities
