We are excited to share the story behind a rooftop renovation and vibrant mural that now adorns the 5th floor playground and common area at the San Diego Rescue Mission downtown. The playground renovation is a significant enhancement to the space and carries profound meaning for the community we serve. The mural is a result of a collaboration between ArtReach, a local nonprofit dedicated to meaningful youth-driven public art, and a host of dedicated volunteers.
The renovation involves demolishing an old fence, building a new garden area with updated flooring and plumbing, and adding fresh paint and new furniture. The 77-foot mural, created by the talented muralist Ian Stiles-Mikl, reflects the lives of the men, women, and children who have experienced homelessness and now find hope at the Mission.
The painting features San Diego landscapes chosen to convey themes of resilience, hope, and community. It starts with a coastal scene featuring California poppies, then moves to gradient mountains and an abstract desert with agave and beavertail cactus. The mural’s shift from night-to-day symbolizes hope and the promise of brighter days, evoking calm, peace, and optimism.
Approximately 15-20 people participated in the mural painting, contributing their time and effort to the project. Notably, one Mission Academy resident, Donald, played a significant role, dedicating his time to mural painting every day.
With the mural now finished, the project is 90% complete, with only the purchase of furniture, umbrellas, planter boxes, and floor repair remaining.
Our heartfelt thanks goes out to Sherwin-Williams for their generous donation of 20 gallons of paint, and IIDA San Diego for their volunteer coordination. We could not touch lives without our many volunteers, partners and donors like you!
